Bookend is developed and published by SkillInflow. Every "we," "us," and "our" in this policy means SkillInflow; Bookend is SkillInflow's product, not a separate company.
No account, no sign-in — nothing tied to your identity
Your events, notes, and goals stay in local, encrypted storage
No analytics, advertising, or crash-reporting SDKs of any kind
Two network calls, ever: a one-time model download, and subscription verification if you subscribe
Voice input is the one exception — your phone's own speech service may use the internet
Future SkillInflow apps won't change this — shared technology, never shared data
All content you create — event details, meeting notes and minutes, reminders, login/session history, notes, goals, and app preferences — is saved in your device's local, encrypted app storage. This data stays on your phone unless you explicitly export a backup file yourself (Settings → Backup & Data) or use the device-to-device sync feature described below. If you export a backup, you choose where that file goes — for example saving it to your own cloud drive or emailing it to yourself; Bookend has no part in that transfer once the file leaves the share sheet.
If you uninstall the app or clear its storage without first exporting a backup, this data is permanently lost. We have no copy to restore it from.
A few third parties are involved in Bookend's operation, each described in full elsewhere on this page: Cloudflare, used purely as a file host for the one-time model download (an anonymous file request — Cloudflare does not receive your name, your content, or anything else about how you use the app; see "QNTessa's one-time setup download"); your phone's own speech-to-text service (commonly Google's, invoked only when you use voice input; see "Microphone and voice input"); and, if you subscribe, Google Play (which handles payment entirely) and a small verification check we run to confirm a subscription is genuine (see "Subscription verification"). Bookend does not use analytics, advertising, or crash-reporting SDKs of any kind, and no other company or service receives any data from this app.
SkillInflow may build other apps in the future. If any of them ever shared underlying technology with Bookend, that would never mean sharing your data — each app's data would stay private to that app by default, and any feature connecting your information between two SkillInflow apps would be off by default and require your explicit, separate permission to turn on.
Bookend includes an optional voice-to-text feature — for meeting notes and minutes, and for speaking a task, meeting, or reminder instead of typing it. When you tap the microphone button, your speech is sent to your phone's own speech-to-text service — the same system service used by your keyboard's microphone key and most other apps — which converts it to text and returns that text to Bookend. On many Android phones this system service is provided by Google and may process your speech using Google's own servers, depending on your device's settings; that happens at the operating-system level, outside Bookend's own code and entirely outside our control, the same as it would for any app using your phone's microphone button. Bookend's own code never records, stores, or transmits raw audio — it only ever receives back the text your phone's speech service returns, and keeps that text only in the field you were editing. Microphone access is requested only when you tap the mic button, and you can deny or revoke it at any time in your phone's system settings.
Bookend can use the camera to scan a printed or on-screen meeting invite (Teams, Zoom, Meet, Webex) so QNTessa can read its details and pre-fill a meeting for you. The camera is only accessed when you tap the in-app camera icon; nothing is captured or used in the background.
Bookend includes an optional device-to-device sync feature that lets you move your own Bookend data (meetings, notes, goals) directly to another device you own, over a direct Bluetooth connection. This transfer happens only between your own devices and never passes through a server we operate.
Bookend also requests location access, but only because Android 11 and earlier require that permission grant before an app can scan for nearby Bluetooth devices at all — this is a platform requirement for Bluetooth to function, not a Bookend feature. Bookend never reads, stores, or uses your actual location for anything.
If you turn on the optional app-lock feature in Settings → Security, you can require a password, your fingerprint or face (via Android's own BiometricPrompt system), or both together before the app or vault unlocks. A password you set is never sent anywhere — it's used only on your device to derive the key that unlocks your local vault. Biometric data is handled entirely by Android's own secure hardware; Bookend never receives or stores your fingerprint or face data itself, the same as any other app using this feature.
If you subscribe to Bookend, Google Play handles the actual payment — we never see or store your card details, billing address, or any payment information; that stays with Google. To confirm a subscription is genuine (the same kind of check most subscription apps do, to keep pricing fair for everyone), your phone sends a random, anonymous ID — generated on your device, not tied to your name or any personal account — along with the purchase confirmation Google Play itself provides, to a small verification service we run. That service checks with Google that the purchase is real and returns only an active/inactive result. It's a one-time confirmation per purchase, plus an occasional quiet re-check in the background to keep that status current — never your notes, meetings, goals, or anything else you've entered into the app.
QNTessa, Bookend's on-device intelligence, needs a one-time download (approximately 5 GB) of its language model before it can be used, delivered from Bookend's own hosting. It downloads a generic model file, not any of your personal content, and nothing you type, save, or generate is sent as part of it. Once downloaded, QNTessa runs entirely on your device: everything it reads and generates stays there, with or without an internet connection, for as long as you use the app.
Bookend schedules local notifications on your device for reminders, events, meetings, and pre-alerts you set up, including exact-time and full-screen alarm-style alerts for reminders you mark as time-critical, and re-arms them automatically if your device restarts. These are handled entirely by your device's operating system; no notification content is sent to or through any external server.
Bookend does not include third-party analytics, advertising, or tracking SDKs. We do not collect usage statistics, device identifiers, or behavioral data of any kind.
Under privacy laws like the GDPR and CCPA, you generally have the right to access, correct, export, or delete your personal data, and to know who it's shared with. Bookend makes most of that moot in the most direct way possible: there's no account, so there's no personal data on our servers to access, correct, export, or delete on your behalf — and nothing is shared with anyone, as covered above. Your data lives only on your device, entirely under your control. To delete it: use Bookend's own export/delete tools in Settings for individual items, clear the app's storage from Android's own App Info screen to wipe everything at once, or uninstall the app. Any of these is immediate and complete — there's no separate server-side copy left behind afterward.
Bookend is not directed at children under 13 and does not knowingly collect information from children, in keeping with its no-account, on-device-only design.
If Bookend, or a future SkillInflow app built on the same platform, ever adds a feature that changes what's described above, the updated version will be made available within the app and the "Last updated" date above will change accordingly. Continued use of the app after an update constitutes acceptance of the revised policy. We won't quietly narrow the commitments made above without calling that change out plainly, here, when it happens.
We'll answer directly — no ticket system, no runaround.
These Terms & Conditions ("Terms") govern your use of Bookend (the "App"). By downloading, installing, or using the App, you agree to these Terms. If you do not agree, please do not use the App.
Bookend is a personal productivity tool for tracking time, events, meetings, reminders, and notes. All data is stored locally on your device, as described in the Privacy Policy. The App does not require an account and does not provide any server-side service.
You must be at least 13 years old to use the App, consistent with the age described in the Privacy Policy's Children's Privacy section. If you are using the App on behalf of an employer or other organization, you confirm you have the authority to accept these Terms on their behalf.
Because all content is stored only on your device, you are solely responsible for backing up your data using the export feature in Settings → Backup & Data. We are not able to recover data lost due to uninstalling the app, clearing app storage, device loss or damage, or factory reset, and we accept no liability for such loss.
You agree to use the App only for lawful personal purposes. You may not attempt to reverse-engineer, decompile, or interfere with the App's normal operation beyond what is permitted by applicable law. The App includes technical measures to protect its integrity, and unauthorised modification or tampering may result in the App becoming non-functional.
Bookend is a general organizational tool. Nothing in the App constitutes legal, medical, financial, or other professional advice. Meeting minutes, notes, and reminders you create are your own content; we do not review, verify, or take responsibility for their accuracy.
QNTessa, Bookend's on-device intelligence, extracts, summarizes, and suggests content based on what you type, speak, or scan — meeting details, minutes, suggested times, and similar output. QNTessa can make mistakes: it may misread, omit, or misinterpret something, and its output should be reviewed before you rely on it, especially for anything time-sensitive or consequential. You are responsible for reviewing and, where needed, correcting QNTessa-generated content before acting on it; we do not guarantee its accuracy and accept no liability for decisions made based on it.
Certain optional features rely on services provided by your device's operating system — for example, speech-to-text recognition and the system share sheet used for backups. These are governed by your device manufacturer's and operating system provider's own terms, which are outside our control.
"Bookend," "QNTessa," "SkillInflow," and associated logos are trademarks of SkillInflow. Nothing in these Terms grants you any right to use them except as necessary to describe your own, non-commercial use of the App.
The App is provided "as is" and "as available," without warranties of any kind, whether express or implied, including but not limited to merchantability, fitness for a particular purpose, and non-infringement. We do not guarantee the App will be uninterrupted, error-free, or free of defects.
To the fullest extent permitted by applicable law, we disclaim all liability for any indirect, incidental, special, consequential, or punitive damages, or any loss of data, arising out of or related to your use of, or inability to use, the App.
We may update the App and these Terms from time to time. Material changes will be reflected by an updated "Last updated" date. Continued use of the App after changes take effect constitutes your acceptance of the revised Terms.
You may stop using the App at any time by uninstalling it. We may discontinue or modify the App at our discretion, with or without notice.
Bookend is built to work the same way for everyone, everywhere — the same private, on-device experience regardless of where you're using the App from. These Terms are governed by generally recognized principles of contract law, applied consistently regardless of your location, without regard to conflict-of-law principles that would point to any one specific jurisdiction's courts. Nothing here limits any non-waivable consumer protection right you have under the law of your own country of residence — where local law requires a different result, that local law applies instead, for you specifically, without changing how these Terms apply to anyone else.
